We enjoyed our stay and the cottage has been decorated and kitted out better since 2010, so do not go by those reviews. It is not 5 star hotel standard, but it was clean and homely which is what we like. I'm not sure I would want to stay at the cottage in winter, as I'm used to double glazing and central heating, though there are storage heaters and you can have an open fire in the lounge. At the end of August we did not use any heating. The best things about the cottage are the views and the coastal walks.

Alston Hall is a wonderful and enchanting place, full of history and we really fell in love with it. There is masses of space both inside and out, perfect if you want a large property where the kids don't get under your feet!
