Town Head House, Cotterdale, Hawes, Hawes, North Yorkshire, DL8 3LT

Description of the self catering

Town Head House is a three bedroom, traditional Wensleydale stone-built house built around 1700's providing a spacious, well equipped comfortable stay. The Cotterdale Beck runs alongside the stone walls of its garden attracting many species of birds and animals including red squirrels. Set in the beautiful hamlet of Cotterdale a hidden gem in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. An ideal base for walking, cycling and touring or relaxing days taking in the spectacular views across the green meadows and uplands pastures, a maze of stonewalls between which sheep and cows peacefully graze. Car parking for 2 cars directly by the cottage. 2 pets welcome.

Best Features

Cotterdale is the “secret” of the Yorkshire Dales, yet it lies only four miles from the market town of Hawes.

Cotterdale is a very small hamlet, consisting of only 12 cottages. To find this haven of peace and quiet follow the narrow Dale road for a mile and a half as it runs alongside the twisting, bubbling Cotter Beck a fast flowing mountain steam after which the Dale is named. As you drive along this road a true perspective of the picture postcard location of the hamlet is obtained. Cotterdale is nestles under the protection of high fells, parts which are covered with thick pine forest. Surrounding Cotterdale are green meadows and upland pastures divided by a maze of stone walls between which sheep and cattle peacefully graze.

Here you will find the perfect place for a relaxing country holiday, away from shops, telephones or even street lights; here your companions will be red squirrels, sheep, cows, pheasants as well as the ten permanent residents.

Sleeps: from 1 to 7

Unlike other reviews which were posted some time ago, my review is more up to date. The cottage is in a beautiful location, lots of wildlife birds squirrels etc. The bedrooms are well furnished and the bedding top rate. The bathroom well fitted and the linen very good.On our arrival, we were cold and found no logs or kindling for the fire ,and 2 of the old electric heaters not working. The lights in the kitchen and lounge not working, just told to press a button on the phone for help, problem phone not working. Managed with help of next door people to correct the fault. My wife had taken a chicken to cook but the fan oven not working. top oven too small for chicken, so cooked next door. The freezer was last defrosted in the last ice age.The holiday was meant to be a relaxation, we now need another break. We have written to the owners to complain but they have seen fit to ignore us. So if you are going to this cottage, the best of luck.

The cottage is set in a beautiful location, if tranquility is what you are looking for, then this is the place. We found the cottage to be exceptionally clean and well maintained. The sitting room was very comfortable, with sky tv and Internet access being a bonus! The bedrooms are lovely, with comfortable beds with crisp, clean linen all provided. The kitchen has everything you would need to prepare a meal from a small snack up to a large three course dinner.

Our second visit to Cotterdale Cottages. The most fantastic setting! If you like to have no street lights, shops, pubs and peace and quiet this is the place to be. The wild life is abundant and the red squirrels are frequent visitors. The cottage is warm well equipped and so pretty. We have already booked a third visit. Excellent cottage in the middle of nowhere. Well equipped, nice beck running through the garden, lots of birds and red squirrels coming to feed in the garden. surrounded by footpaths to explore. We booked it as a thank you for our parents for the wedding and we lost track of how many times they thanked us over the weekend because it was such an amazing place!

We had a fabulous week at Town Head. Everything went very smoothly from key collection to leaving. A stunning place to stay, amazing views and wildlife and absolutely everything we needed in the cottage. I beleive Town Head and Eller Haw provide everything you need for a wonderful stay. Waking up to the sound of the beck in the morning is fabulous. Short drive to local pubs and restaurants. Good shops for stocking up and an excellent butchers. Nothing at all I could fault about this cottage and location. The scenery and peace of Cotterdale has to be seen to be beleived.

Delightful cosy warm cottage in a beautiful location.

Had everything we needed and the wifi connection was better than at home.

The red squirrels are a bonus and we saw them everyday, also enjoyed watching the birds feeding on seed we put out.

If you want a cottage in a great part of our country with a very caring owner this is the one for you.

We will be going back in 2012.

Excellent Property, very remote and peaceful. More than enough space for all of us, with spacious bedrooms and bathroom.

Garden is a good size and the girls loved the stream at the bottom. A note for those with dogs - the garden is not totally enclosed so Dogs can just wander up the stream and escape and also have access to the other cottages garden as well. There are plenty of interesting smells (i.e. Pheasant, sheep, squirrels) so your dog is most likley to go for a wander if the opportunity presents itself.

Great walking straight out of the cottage up onto the fell through the forest. The cottage is also ideally situated to get out an about too. Hawes and the Wensleydale creamery are v.close by and it is only a 25-30min drive out to Ingleton Waterfalls and Caves.

Had a great relaxing week, thanks.

Having been to the Yorkshire Dales for over 20 years, we had never heard of Cotterdale, even though we`d been to Hawes many times. We were also surprised of the claim of red squirrels actually living there as we have never seen them!!! So imagine my surprise when 2 sat near the car watching me unpack! Fabulous! And we saw them every day. And the babbling brook at the foot of the garden- magical (and the rain that turned it into a roaring stream- still fantastic- showing the force of nature at work!). A beautiful cottage, in an extraordinarily beautiful Dale- walks from the door, red squirrels, pheasants galore and waterfalls a plenty. We didnt want to leave. And we didn’t. Meals in cooked from the excellent butchers in Baimbridge (a must visit- sirloin steak exquisite and the setting on the bridge- just go see!) and Hawes. Also takeaway from the friendly Hawes Curry Cottage and Hawes chippie- just 10 minutes drive.

All in all a most relaxing holiday- we will be back!

This is the second time we have stayed at Town Head House, luckily we came across it last year the property was brilliant then and the improvements which have been made this year are amazing wish we could have stayed longer. The cottage is situated in an amazing hamlet one and a half miles from the main road with fantastic views, if you want seclusion and tranquillity this is the place for you. The cottage is so well equipped and has everything you could possibly want and you do not even have to bring any towels a they are also supplied. We will definitely be returning again next year for our main holiday and hopefully for another break earlier in the year. Every day without fail we saw red squirrels apart from all the other wildlife which could be seen from the kitchen window. Nearby Hawes has great facilities and the people are really friendly, a must is a trip to the Wensleydale Creamery where you can taste all the cheeses that they make. Thank you Gaynor for a lovely stay and look forward to returning soon.

A lovely, relaxing stay at Town Head House in Cotterdale. We all absolutely loved the beck and had great fun playing in it whenever the weather allowed us! Watching the red squirrels and identifying the different birds in the area were all great pastimes of the week (big thanks for leaving a couple of bird guides for us). We thought the personal touches were very welcoming; Gaynor buying a stairgate for us to use to keep the dog in the utility room; the Belfast sink full of fresh herbs to use in our cooking and the use of a slow cooker (bought much culinary joy during the week). Fabulous.

We stayed at Town Head for my husbands birthday in March 2011, just for two nights with friends. As soon as we arrived we realised we had made a mistake..... we'd only booked two nights instead of a week!!! Gaynor was in a total flap when we got there, due to the fact that a new bathroom had been installed and the builders had badly let her down to complete in time. However, the cottage didn't dissappoint in anyway as a reslut of her frantic last minute cleaning and incredible attention to detail! A lovely warm welcome dispite all her worries. This is the most wonderful spot to spend time in and in the peace and tranquility - you barely want to leave the cottage! Our neighbours in Eller Haw saw the Red Squirrels!! We didn't so we simply HAVE to go back. Thanks again Gaynor!

Cottage Review:

The cottage is ideal for those loving long secluded walks. The cottage is set amongst acres and acres of land, and being only one of a small hamlet, we found that we didn't really see any one but our neighbours. It was a fantastic retreat which really allowed us town loving folks to appreciate the nature.

At the foot of the garden is a babbling brook. You can follow this whilst hunting for fossils in the stones tossed up by the flow of the water.

The owners are unbelievably dog and child friendly with items to borrow which go way past the norm ie, baby carrier, dog bowls, oodles of toys, plastic cutlery and crockery and so on...

There's lots of wildlife for the kids to explore and we saw various red squirrels going about their business.

The nearest town is Hawes which has a selection of shops and pubs. 'The Crown' did very nice home cooked food, 'Chaste' looked nice but the food was over priced, tasteless and cold.

The cottage facilities were good and there was more than enough storage for clothes and general unpacking.
