Hole Farm, , Chagford, Devon, TQ13 8DY

Description of the holiday cottage

Hole Farm 2 miles from Chagford, a mile from the open moor, a thatched, detached, Grade I listed, medieval Dartmoor longhouse, stone mullion-windowed, full of history. The Civil War was fought through it, Roundheads besieged in the kitchen. It is set in its own clean, private farmyard/courtyard of listed farm barns in front, with large, mainly lawned garden (unfenced 5' drop, small children beware) behind with patio (table/chairs) and orchard (swing); 130 acres of farmland surround it.

Inside, full of character and complication. Porch; thick oak door to central passage, off which utility room (washing machine, tumble drier, fridge-freezer) with loo; bathroom (bath plus hand-shower, washbasin). Living room with huge inglenook open fire, oak floors, beams, window seat, terrific ancient screen panelling, TV/DVD/video; quiet room with leather chairs, jigsaw puzzle table; large farmhousey kitchen/dining room with brick floor, Aga (low heat May to October) plus electric cooker, dishwasher, microwave, larder fridge, refectory table seating 10, window seat, stone mullion window.

Two sets of steep, uneven stairs to four bedrooms, wood-floored (rugs), white-walled: stairs from living room up to small corridor, 4'10" lintel into the master double (6 foot carved oak bed, TV) with en suite bathroom (bath with shower over, washbasin, bidet, separate loo), another double, and family bathroom (suite, shower over bath). Also from the living room, a spiral staircase to a large double with en suite loo, and a twin that connects with the second double room mentioned.

A truly marvellous house. ... included is a cottage, just across the courtyard, with stable doors to kitchen/dining room (washer-drier), beamed living room (woodburner) with window seat and door to courtyard, and open tread stairs up to two bedrooms, a twin (washbasin), and a single (4'6" bed); bathroom (bath plus hand-shower, washbasin) and separate loo. Spring water. Arrival after 4pm.

This place is absolutely stunning. The main farmhouse is full of history and character and has everything you need for a large group. It has the added benefit of an additional cottage with two further bedrooms. The location is perfect, a short car ride to the village of Chagford, the reservoir is only five mins away and you are quickly out on to the open moor. I would highly recommend this place.

On the 2nd day of our 3rd visit never been disappointed whatever the weather conditions, including that electrical storm last night (wasn't that something else spectacular!!). Place is clean and tidy and has that welcoming feel and the family just love it.

Hole Farm is an incredible place, full of history, and ideally placed for exploring the delights of Dartmoor.. What price the peace and quiet, if this is something you value. The furnishings, whilst being comfortable, are very much in keeping with the whole ambience of the place. We are in the middle of our stay, and already know we will be sad to leave!

As someone that doesn't normally write reviews, I felt compelled to leave one to counter the poor review previously left. This house might not be for everyone, BUT...

Hole Farm is an amazing place to stay! Full of history, fascinating and tranquil, it really is the perfect getaway.

I am booked with friends to stay this year, but have visited with family 4 previously. My parents are regulars having stayed 10+ times.

Yes, the floors are wonky, the sofa's have seen better days and the fire can be a bit smoky, but this house is old and full of character. Than
