Description of the holiday cottage

These holiday cottages have a secluded setting in scenic Scottish countryside on the banks of the River Ewe, very close to the village of Poolewe (about a mile away) in Ross-shire. There are many well known places and Wester Ross attractions nearby including the famous Inverewe Tropical Gardens - within walking distance. Guests at Croft Cottages can also walk along the riverbank or the shores of Loch Ewe / Loch Maree, or visit the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve, the Torridon Nature Reserve or the sandy beaches in and around Gairloch.

Best Features

Both properties have views of the mountains above Loch Maree and are perfect for climbers, walkers or anyone looking for a quiet and peaceful holiday. Fishing, golf courses and boat trips are all available locally.

The cottages are full of character, built of original stone, have been carefully restored and have good quality furnishings (with some antiques).

Lovely cottage and very well equipped. The croft is lovely and warm, quiet and very dog friendly. The garden in the front is very secure. Views from the kitchen are stunning, our best times were spent sitting at the table looking out. Alec is such a welcoming host, I wish we had had more time to chat to him and learn more about the area.

We stayed at Alex's cottage, and he never ceased to amaze us with his calm, soothing wonderfully-welcoming Highland greeting and ever-warm hospitality.

His home-from-home cottage was impeccably clean, cosy and ready for our care-free, get-away-from-it-all holiday in Wester Ross, an area of true outstanding natural beauty, yet an easy stroll to the village of Poolewe itself.

We love the area and all that Scottish nature can throw at us. And there is plenty to explore and discover: A wealth of wildlife (a haven for twitchers), rambling in the hills, beach-combing, visiting some of the historical sites, ambling around the world-famous Poolewe Gardens, and visiting some rather lovely restaurants or cafes (offering the freshest sea-food you could wish for).

Croft Cottage is the perfect hide-away: Sit outside to enjoy the stunning views of Loch Maree and the surrounding mountains.

This place is piece of Scottish Heaven, Alex the perfect gentleman and host.

We have been visiting for about 15 years and have stayed in both cottages. The views are wonderful whatever the weather and the cottages are in a peaceful setting. They are well equipped as well as comfortable and uniquely different. The host is extremely welcoming and helpful which adds to the joy of being there.

Cottage Review:

We had a wonderful week. The setting of the cottage is perfect; a quiet location where one can look out at or walk by the river, into the fields and woods, yet close to Poolewe village. Everything that we could possibly need was provided and because it was still chilly outside we lit the fire every evening.

In our cottage the stairs were, as we had been warned, steep, but perfectly negotiable as long as one was careful. Our host was very welcoming and it felt like a home from home. I hope we shall be able to visit again.

I should also add that the cottages are extremely reasonably priced. [Added at Editor's discretion since it appears to be a helpful review and the reviewer has been authenticated]

We have been visiting since 2000. The cottages are in a stunning location and Alex is a first class host. All necessary amenities are available in the cottages. The cottages are an ideal base for exploring one of the most beautiful areas in the Scottish Highlands.

Highly recommended!

This year was our third visit. The croft cottages are in a location with superb views and centrally situated for access to Ullapool in the north and Skye to the south. You don't even need to use your car, just walk out of the door and explore the local footpaths to the mountains and lochs. Alex offers guests a warm welcome in his comfortably furnished accommodation.
