Wheelhouse Cottage, Cartmel, Cumbria,

Description of the self catering

For me, Cartmel is one of Cumbrias finest and unique villages. Set on the Cartmel Peninsular, surrounded by rolling hills that tumble down to the coast, it is picture perfect. With ancient buildings, an impressive medieval priory, a towering arch and a sweet, clear river, all is centred on a sunny square to gather and sit, or wine and dine in one of the many inns or fine restaurants. There are good local walks, notable Hampsfell and Eggerslack wood, a limestone fell, where the summit gives panoramic views of the Morecambe Bay and the Lake District Mountains.

Cottage Review:

This cottage is in a lovely setting, exceptionally clean and the welcome hamper was a lovely touch. Everything is to a high standard including the bedding and towels. The owners have thought of everything including binoculars, a pad for shopping lists, milk, bread and butter, dressing gowns and also blankets for nights outside by the firepit.

It was lovely to sit and watch the ducks on the river, a couple would look at you until you opened the window and fed them !!

Cartmel and the cottage itself is so nice that we didn't really want to go elsewhere but we made ourselves.Grange over sands is a nice place to visit as is Holken Hall ( the gardens are beautiful) but the cafè is exceptional, dogs are welcome too and the food is freshly prepared and probably the best meal we had our entire stay.

We did eat at the Cavendish Arms, the breakfast was average, the evening meal was really good.

The only thing we were disappointed with was that when I booked the cottage, it had a hot tub and that is why I booked it,I was not made aware that it was no longer there as I would've cancelled my booking. You usually pay more for a property with a tub and I feel this should have been reflected in the price, there is a summer house now but we only used it once,it's a poor swap for a hot tub.

Also there is a few steps to manage to get in the cottage and out to the small rear garden so I had to keep picking my elderly dog up to get in and also to take him outside. Other than these issues, we had a lovely relaxing week.
