Description of the self catering property

CREAG-an-FHITHICH (pronounced craig-an-eeoch) meaning 'Rock of the Raven', is available as four bedroom self catering holiday accommodation for a relaxing or busy holiday on the sea front at Loch Melfort. When the weather is good, the sun shines on the house all day and meals can be taken alfresco, even out of season. The beautiful views of the loch, marina and hills with the isles of Shuna, Luing and Scarba in the distance are ever-changing. The sunsets are breathtaking.

Best Features

- The stone and slate Victorian manse was built in 1850. It has recently been modernised and turned into a comfortable house, whilst retaining its original character.

- Located in the village of Kilmelford, on the West Coast of Scotland, fifteen miles south of Oban, railhead, gateway to the Isles and the famous beach at Ganavan Sands.

- The area is ideal for exploring the Highlands. Walking, cycling, riding, fishing, sailing and golf are popular pursuits.

- Watch the seals, cormorants, eider duck and the elusive otter, all from the garden. Fish on the sea loch from the shore in front of the house. The freshwater lochs can be fished by permit from the village Post Office.

- Small boats can be launched across the shore in front of the house.

Absolutely stunning location with views to die for over the loch. Plenty of parking and enough space inside for 9 people to be comfortable. Great to have four toilets!

This house was clean beyond clean and super equipped! If charm, character, location and peace is what you are after then this is the place for you!!!

Make up of party:  Family from grandparents to grandchildren. A great place for a family get away or for a group of friends looking for a base.

Wonderful cottage in an fantastic area. Provides everything you may ever need during your stay. Superb bathrooms, very well equipped kitchen, lovingly decorated bedrooms, great surroundings, ample space in general... Book immediately!

Even if you came without car you'd find plenty of possibilities: beach combing, hillwalking, pier fishing, sea otter spotting, etc. And you must try the food in the "Shower of Herring" at Melford Village.

Friendly landlords with an interesting family tradition that you can almost feel in the rooms.

Very good value for what you get! It was our second stay and we'll be back for sure.

An outstanding cottage in a beautiful area of Scotland. We didn't have to drive for more than 20minutes to find wonderful walks every day. The cottage was well stocked with everything we could possibly need. The bathrooms were luxurious and provided enough showers to avoid queing in the morning.

we had a glorious week, and were able to make arrangements with the boatyard across the water, to launch our small motor boat (super dory). Great fun had by all - including my Mum (who is 76) and my two granchildren (10 and 5). The house was just right for a family, everything you need is provided and a relaxed and cmfortable feel to the house. Great value for money and we cannot recommend highly enough.

BEAUTIFUL setting, excellent size, loads of parking space and very good facilities. This truly felt like a home from home with a very comfortable feel to it. Meals around a large table with all the family and cosying down for the night in the living room with a log fire... IDEAL!

A very good location to explore the west coast from and the Cuilfail Hotel provides a nice friendly atmosphere for a cheeky pint or dram.

We normally holiday in a cottage 2-3 times a year and like to try different locations but this is somewhere we feel we could use again and again.

This is my perfect house. It's full of character, has loads of space, inside and out and the location is second to none. It's extremely well-equipped - you couldn't want for cooking implements, or for something to read. It's well placed for visiting the surrounding area. We took trips to Arran and to Mull and Iona (you need to book the ferry to Mull). I can't imagine anyone not liking this place.

Make up of party:  Couple and my 83 year old mother. My mother is recently widowed - she was able to have as much space as she wanted, and to watch the comings and goings of the yachts if she didn't feel like coming out with us.

Fantastic! The house, location, ticked all the boxes. Perfect for families or couples, we made good use of the well equipped kitchen and loved the Ever-hot stove. We went with the intention of using the many local restaurants, but decide to stay at home and cook after making use of the local pub, which is just a short walk from the house.

No matter if we were watching wildlife from the garden, enjoying one of the many walks in the area or taken the few steps down to the shore before relaxing around the fire in the evening we enjoyed every bit of it… Creag-an-Fhithich is exactly as the owners described it, we stay in many cottages and this is not usually the case. Fantastic!!!

The accomodation was second to none. The cottage was extremely clean and well equipped. The views were spectacular and both the garden and house had every thing you could wish for. We wouldn't hesitate to return as none of us wanted to leave. Many thanks for such a beautiful cottage and holiday.

A lovely, spacious cottage in an area of superb natural beauty. Four toilets an absolute luxury when you have two families sharing - it never felt crowded. We were not fans of AGA-type ovens but may well become converts!

Super clean and welcoming. Only downside was that perhaps a few of the mattresses on the single beds were not comfortable enough for an adult. Had a fabulous week even with less than ideal weather.

Make up of party:  Two families sharing. 6 children total including an infant.

What an outstanding house and location, we fell in love with the house as soon as we got there. The house was clean and tidy, ample very spacious rooms and the kitchen is extremely well equipped. We loved the fact that many of the owners personal belongings are there, including photo's and china, which made it feel like a home from home. The fishing from Tinker's point was great, we caught lots of mackerel. Melfort is also a great base for touring Scotland, the roads are good and accessable with beautiful views, we also saw wild deer, red squirrels and a very obliging seal in the loch just outside the house! We also felt very safe and it was lovely that the children could play outside without having to have constant supervision. We were all very sad when we had to leave, but hope to return in the future.

Make up of party:  2 Families sharing, so 8 people in the house.

We know the area well and have always admired this cottage for its stunning location and amazing views. Our stay did not disappoint! The house is spacious, welcoming and extremely well equipped; the photos on the website do not do it justice. A magical place to stay and we can't wait to return.

I would like to take this moment to say how wonderful Creag-an-Fhithich is - it's in a phenomenal location, and the facilities were absolutely spot-on for our purposes. The weather was stunning, making the walking in the surrounding hills a great tonic for life away from the city. We all arrived home thoroughly relaxed and ready for the new year. I'd have no hesitations in recommending Creag-an-Fhithich to anyone in the future.

Cottage Review:

We rent 3-4 properties a year in the UK and this is the only one we return to every year. It is without fail clean with wonderful smelling bedding and comfortable beds. The house is warm and welcoming without a holiday cottage feel or the smell of UHT milk which so often pervades other properties. Everything you would expect from Scotland is on the doorstep with exceptional walks close by. The house is exceptionally equipped I need only tell you that there are two sets of lobster forks for it to be clear that this is not somewhere you will struggle for a lemon juicer. It includes equipment for picnic storage such as boxes and tubs (almost never present in holiday homes). I put the facilities as 'good' only because this is not the luxury market with hot tubs and swimming pools but the house boasts large beautifully furnished rooms with an exceptionally well appointed en suite with deep bath and underfloor heating. The house itself is actually much bigger than it appears in the photos since the scale of the high ceilings cannot be adequately represented. It has an almost 'Upstairs Downstairs' feel to it from a previous era. This is largely due to the dining room with impressive tables and chairs and the drawing room (which could never be called a lounge)complete with chandelier. It is almost impossible not to dress for dinner. That said the house has the cosy warmth of a cottage. The views from the front of the house are of the lock with everchanging colours and skies. The road is very quiet indeed. The owners are friendly and booking is organised, clear and straightforward. You might think that I have some personal interest in the property or business from this glowing account but I have never met the owners and speak only as a very satisfied customer. To my mind there isn't a place like it in this price range in the UK. Book it immediately.

Make up of party:  Have been for the last 5 years with a mix of friends/family.
