Cottage Review:

Wheathill is situated in a great location to explore both the New Forest and the Hampshire/East Dorset beaches. The village of Pennington has various takeaways and two convenience stores within walking distance of the house. Waitrose in Lymington is a half hour walk and the town itself and quayside a good 45 mins but pleasant walk. The house listing itself benefits from some rather historic pictures which show a bright and open house. This was not what we found on arrival! Our experience was of a much more overgrown garden both back and front which meant the house was both dark and cold. We had to have lights on in the kitchen, and lounge even with the kitchen door propped open and when it was sunny. The general air of the house was tired, it could do with some tlc and a very good clean in places. The kitchen was mostly well equipped but there were some obvious things missing elsewhere in the house such as bins in all bathrooms, toilet roll holders, somewhere to hang a towel. The washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets left in the house were appreciated. The sofas and arm chair in the lounge provided basic comfort but we were only a party of 7, a larger group may have struggled to sit all together in the lounge. Two rooms afforded ‘family accommodation’ with a double and two single beds in but this made them cramped. The extension at the side which looked like an old garage had a very odd smell, housed the boiler, had no opening window but a hole through from inside to out which may once have housed a vent? The washing machine and dryer were good to have; a washing line or clothes airer would have also been a benefit for those clothes which can’t be tumbled or for those not wishing to tumble dry clothing. WiFi is provided but is weak and very unreliable so would not suit someone needing to work or study away from home. There was some seating available in the small area of the garden which was accessible in the form of pub picnic benches and a couple of plastic garden chairs. The house is in very close proximity to its neighbours. It was possible to move these green chairs over the day to chase the sun. It was such a shame as the garden could be an asset to the property. Considering the proximity to what appears to be a fairly busy road and single glazing, the people sleeping at the front of the house reported it to be not too noisy. Be aware that the entrance to the drive is VERY narrow- we found it easiest to reverse in. We had chosen this property for an extended family holiday for 3 generations; it suited our brief in terms of location and so much more on paper, but sadly in reality, the location was the most attractive feature.

Disgusting: House had not been cleaned, bathroom was revolting. Garden over grown. Beds smelt. Wardrobe disgusting. I’d spend your money somewhere that had looked after their property. This house is so old. no tlc at all. Filthy & dangerous for kids as had a lot of junk left in the garden.

No care for Covid. everything was rotten. Dirty. we’ve cut our holiday short & going home early.

this house was the dirtiest house I have ever seen ! The windows haven't been cleaned for years and the showers were full of human hair the garden had not been tidied up for years and the children couldn't play out in it , the hot water went on and off and the showers were either too hot or cold, the Internet didn't work and the garage that was turned into a bedroom had the boiler in that would keep you awake all night and cobwebs everywhere

Stayed here with a large group in November 2012. After I read the reviews I was expecting something awful. To be fair, it's not five-star, but it was perfectly OK.

The bedroom in the converted garage is less than ideal, but as a whole the house had a homely feel and was in a lovely location. I wouldn't recommend it overwhelmingly but I've certainly stayed in far worse.

This property was very tired. It reminded us of student digs. If an estate agent was selling it, they would comment that it is in need of refurbishment. There is only one reception room which has three sofas that seat 14 and includes the dining table. Two of our party refused to stay and returned home. The garden front and back is a mess and I doubt a gardener has been there for years. The owners need to invest a bit in their property. However it is in a great location and in summer if you are out all the time it will be OK.

FANTASTIC LOCATION, *BUT* the house was very creaky and noisy and sound carries too easily (I know it's old, but we've stayed in similar and not had so much of a problem) and smelt a bit weird all through. One of the bedrooms is essentially the garage and it's really badly done, it's got the boiler in it, the window has no blinds and it's a really high velux one so we couldn't even cover it... and it really reeked of something like cat pee. The living room is pretty dark, luckily we had nice weather so we weren't sitting in it very often. There also wasn't much hot water, even for one person to shower, never mind the 16 of us who were staying there. Really not good for large groups - the bedrooms were a decent size but had beds packed in, so if you're not great buddies with your roomie when you arrive, you will be nice and cosy....

Be very careful with Wheathill cottage from Halcyon. "Bedroom 7" isn't a bedroom it's an old garage! And it hasn't been converted properly. Contains the boiler, no opening windows, cold concrete floor and dirty. If you're considering staying at this cottage, insist on getting details of bedroom 7.

Make up of party:  Mixed party.
