The Old School, Howick, Alnwick, Northumberland, NE66 3LE

Description of the cottage holiday

This superb listed building was once a school for Howick Village, and part of the Howick Estate, which was the home of the 2nd Earl Grey, who became Prime Minister in 1830 and whose monument stands at the top of Grey Street in Newcastle. There has been a long tradition in the family as tree planters and the extensive grounds and formal gardens which surround Howick Hall are open to the public from April to October. The arboretum, which includes 65 acres of woodland walks, is open all year and guests are provided with a free pass to the gardens and arboretum, a delight to explore. The shoreline is just 400 metres away on a stunning coastal stretch designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest where you can enjoy spectacular views of Dunstanburgh Castle, interesting bird life and wild flowers on a walk to Craster or Alnmouth.

Cottage Review:

The school closed in 1960 but was converted to a holiday cottage more recently. It is a generous amount of space for two people, warm and comfortable. There is room for a very large bed upstairs and a living room with two big settees and a six-seater, solid oak table downstairs. There's a good bathroom downstairs and an additional toilet with basin upstairs. Everything is of high quality, clean and well-managed. The location is unbeatable for the pleasures of the countryside, including beautiful surroundings, starry nights, and peace and quiet in abundance. The proximity to the heritage coast and to the vast Howick estate offers great walks and wildlife. Several excellent pubs and restaurants are within an easy drive or (infrequent) bus ride, although the nearest proper shops are in Alnwick (the publicity is confusing about this, suggesting that Howick is part of Alnwick, whereas it is a place in its own right, a small but historic village actually about 7 miles from Alnwick and 2 miles from Craster).

Cottage Review: Excellent cottage, particularly rare to find a cottage which has 3 beautiful bedrooms for all adults and not just catering for a family with small children like most! One warning, we have a dog however the area is highly prone to ticks and our poor little Lhasa has been bitten all over despite not going very far out of the village with him! You must bring flea treatment if you are bringing a dog, unfortunately we didn't know until we got here and were warned by staff in the shops in the nearby village of Moretonhampstead. Beware if you want to bring a dog to the area otherwise, it's spot on!

Cottage Review: Everything about the Schoolhouse is totally stunning. It's peaceful location, lovely garden, spacious interior so beautifully furnished, extensively equipped. (In some ways it's a shame it is a holiday let - we thought it a house to die for!!)
