Lizard's Rest, Swanage, Dorset,

Description of the holiday cottage

Lizard's Rest is a detached, well presented and deceptively spacious four bedroomed property, ideally positioned about four minutes walk from the beach, and all the amenities within the seaside town of Swanage. Here you have a traditional family resort with a fine sandy beach, good choice of shops and places to eat, entertainment and activities all surrounded by the beautiful Purbeck hills and coastline. Step back in time as you travel along on the Swanage steam railway, marvel at the scenery from the top of Corfe Castle, walk around the old Saxon walls of Wareham to the quay and perhaps take a boat trip to Poole harbour. There are walkways and cycleways around the Purbeck countryside taking you off the beaten track. The surfers bay of choice when the seas suit is nearby Kimmeridge Bay, for those seeking sandy dunes to hide in Studland beach is idyllic. The National Trust Brownsea Island is a perfect location for a picnic, catch a boat from Poole Harbour for a special day out. The nearby attractions of Bovington Tank Museum and Monkey World are all in easy reach of the property as are the major shopping centres of Poole and Bournemouth via the Studland chain ferry.

Cottage Review:

We found the property to be in an excellent location close to the beach and close to the best equipped children's park in Swanage. The property itself is extremely well appointed and a lot of thought has gone into 'fitting' out the property, every detail thought of from a wonderful well equipped kitchen complete with a large range right down to the duvets under the bottem sheets on the beds for added comfort! There was a lot of us, 10 in total but due to the size and layout of the house we never felt cramped. A thoroughly pleasent holiday had by all, kids and adults! Will definitely be back!

Cottage Review:

A lovely spacious family home that had all the facilities you needed for a week away. The rooms were airy and had plenty of storage and the children loved having a bedroom to share for all 3 of them. The kitchen was well stocked and had everything you needed to cook meals for 7. Having two bathrooms was essential with two families and nice to have a bedroom and bathroom downstairs. The house was clean and tidy and nice touches with some board games and books and of course to find out where all the ornamental lizards were and read about their history. The garden was pleasant to sit in and two free car-parking spaces. Close to the beach and shops - we all had a lovely week and have booked to come back in 2011.

Cottage Review:

I was unfortunate enough to stay here this year. I have been to Swanage many times during the carnival and have stayed in far more luxurious properties that sleep the same amount of people for less money. The pictures on the Internet are deceiving. [Editor's comment: the cottage management company has responded, saying that the property is shown exactly as it is on the website - including a virtual tour of each room]. I was expecting a luxurious property for the price but found a cottage in desperate need of some TLC and modernisation. We arrived to a lovely smell of spilt milk. Someone had spilt milk in the fridge and left it. We spent three hours cleaning it. We complained but nothing was done. [Editor's comment: the cottage management company offered to send cleaners but the offers was declined.] The only good thing about this property is that downstairs is spacious and it's location.

Owner response:
Lizards Rest is a 4* VisitEngland rated property which has been a holiday home to many families who have spent a very enjoyable summer holiday there and give positive feedback. The cleaners of the property take pride in their work and even leave a note in the property with their contact details should any problem be encountered during a holiday. The feedback regarding the spilt milk was given 3 days after arrival and the problem had already been resolved by that time so our office was advised that no action was needed even though a cleaner was offered to return to the property. We ask guests to ring us as soon as they have a problem so that we are able to solve it and on this occasion the office was open and we would have been only too happy to help, but unfortunately the guest did not contact us, as mentioned for 3 days. Lizards Rest has a virtual tour featured on our website which gives a 360 degree view of every room in the house. The living space of the property is indeed spacious and many families have enjoyed the good sized gardens that surround the house. Being in walking distance to Swanage beach and town does make it a superbly located property for families.

Cottage Review: We had a lovely holiday at Lizard’s Rest. It is a very pleasant house in a good location. On Tuesdays in the Summer there is a market in the car park opposite which was very convenient.
