Dept of Culture Encourages MyCottageHoliday
25th Feb 2011: Following the announcement of John Penrose's, the Minister for Tourism, initiative to "encourage any customer websites that improve the quality of information which visitors can use to choose the right holiday for them, so they make informed choices", we were pleased to receive this letter from his department:
Dear Mr Brown
Thank you for yesterday's email about customer review websites which has been passed to me for reply. These sites should be self regulated rather than influenced by government. People will vote with their feet. Those that offer good quality advice will prosper and those that don't won't. In developing a Tourism Strategy, we are considering the need for a better balance between star-rating schemes and customer feedback websites, so customers can make a better and more informed choice.
It appears that your initiative is exactly what is required and may I wish you all the best.

Travel Review Sites: the Good... And the Not so Good
This one comes a bit out of left field and, strictly speaking, it's not solely a user-generated content site either. But as a source of holiday cottage reviews it's absolutely first-rate. A great selection of holiday cottage rentals for the UK and Ireland with all the necessary information, provided by users, clearly laid out. Verdict: a handy place to head for holiday cottages.Mintel Self Catering Research 30 October 2009
Cottage Holiday Research Starts With Reviews
Half of all adults now research their holidays online and holidaymakers are now looking to each other for advice and information about self-catering accommodation. According to the leisure research company Mintel, holidaymakers are becoming more inclined to rely on reviews from the other people rather than from official sites. In the 'Holidays on the Internet' report, they report that "There is massive interest in consumer generated content and reviews. This is having an impact on the holiday market as holidaymakers are becoming more inclined to rely on reviews from the general public - anti-experts - than look for official sites or professional reviews".Visit Britain Press Release 14 May 2009

Compare cottages
Ever booked a holiday cottage and found that "old-fashioned charm" really meant "no central heating" or that the "short walk from the beach" took all morning? So with more of us expected to holiday in the UK, news of a review site dedicated solely to self-catering properties is welcome indeed. At the moment the number of reviews is small but that should change as more users discover the site which promises "Everything you wanted to write in the guest book, but were too polite to say!"The Association of Scotland's Self-Caterers 26 January 2009
MyCottageHoliday - Tripadvisor for cottages!
This new review website aims to become the definitive review site exclusively for self-catering holidays in the UK (something Tripadvisor is quite poor on just now). You are encouraged to post reviews of your self-catering holiday experiences on this site! Please Add a Review
You may have come to MyCottageHoliday to read reviews about holiday cottages. If you are here looking for reviews now, you evidently think they might be helpful. At this very moment someone could be looking for reviews about cottages where you have stayed so why not add a review yourself? Reviews needn't be long but if there are useful bits of information you can pass on to other UK cottage holidaymakers then please add a review to the site.
Cottages Without Reviews
This will make it even easier for you to leave a review ... we allow cottage owners to add their own cottages even if there have been no reviews of their property. We believe that if an owner want to add a cottage and encourage their visitors to leave a review, that's a good sign. And a plus for reviewers, all the basic details of the cottage will already be on the site!
Also, if owners supply information about their homes, that might help you choose the right cottage for you and your party. Plus, we want owners to respond to reviews - we're sure you'd want to know if the owner has addressed issues raised in a review. So we welcome owners who wish to add their cottages to the site.
