Wootton House, Butleigh Wootton, Somerset,

Description of the self catering property

Wootton House is a fine country house with a Queen Anne facade on the edge of Butleigh Wootton, overlooked by the monument of Admiral Sir Samuel Hood high on Polden Ridge. The house has evolved since its original construction in the 18th cent. for the Hood family. It sits on a 1,000 acre estate comprising gardens, woods, lake, parkland and working farms. It has a large mature garden (all yours) with croquet lawn and hard tennis court; across the fields are fishponds, and there's a small lake in the woods. At the end of the drive is the Home Farm, where riding can be arranged with the tenant farmer and where freshTor Beef', grazed on the slopes of Glastonbury Tor, is sold.

Cottage Review: We had a wonderful family gathering here to celebrate my birthday and it was great to be able to open the door and let the children out to run around freely.

Cottage Review: It was a privilage to stay at Wootton House with its grandeur and homely touches. The history was apparent in every corner and it lovely that they hadnt removed all the family paintings and ornaments. You have graded this house at 3* and I understand that this is because of the work that they are still doing to the house but it is a 5* property in so many ways - truly unique and beautiful. We will certainly be back to stay again. a wonderful short break.

Cottage Review: The size of the accommodation was more than we expected (not sure if we will be able to match it anywhere else next year), the facilities were just right for the 12 of us. We loved the history of the property and the honesty of the write up in the brochure and owners in their information book with regards to the condition of some of the rooms. The tennis court and games room were much used by the children (and adults) and it was great to be able to let them have the run of all the outside space.

Cottage Review: Once again an excellent service from Helpful Holidays: A great range of properties, accurately described and in detail including a good summary of the surrounding area; an easy to use website backed up by a responsive and helpful telephone service; applies to both small and large properties for a short or longer let. Please keep doing what you are doing now.

Cottage Review: Thank you for all the help and support. We could pre-book the house until our ill friend was well again. And when we were in England in May 08, you made it possible for us to contact the caretaker of the house so we could see the house before we booked it.

Cottage Review: We were celebrating my 30th birthday. I couldn't have asked for a better holiday house. We all had an absolutely fabulous time, please pass on my compliments to your helpful staff and the wonderful owners who have put this great house up for rent in the first place. There was one unwelcome visitor however, we discovered a mouse had tried to eat our vegetables!!!!
