  • "Just a few minor things - the main en-suite bedroom door doesn’t close without slamming it and the bathroom door doesn’t lock."

Also, the bed settee isn’t very comfortable at all and the person who slept on it didn’t sleep very well. We had a lovely time here and there was plenty of room for all of us including the dogs!

As a multi generational family gathering, we found the accommodation catered for all members. Table football and pool table a big hit with some, whilst the hot tub was a real bonus for others. Would thoroughly recommend this house for similar parties.

  • "Absolutely gorgeous property."

We loved it, loved the location. It suited our party of 12 people aged between 13 - 73, plus a dog for a Christmas weekend away. We enjoyed a walk down to coast and walked along the beach one day and then a drive into Staithes for lunch the next. The Christmas decorations were lovely in the property.

From the moment we stepped through the door we were impressed with whole house. The two lounges were a bonus as was having two kitchens. Both kitchens were fully equipped and met all our needs. The beds were amazingly comfortable and the showers were modern and clean. Just one little observation would be that the bottom of the showers were rather slippy. The hot tub and sauna were well utilised by our party! We would definitely recommend The Power House to anyone considering this property

We were expecting to find the place dirty having looked at previous reviews but it was perfect. The location & facilities were great. 75% of the group said the beds were the comfiest night sleep and a few disagreed but that might just be personal preference of a good bed! We had multiple showers at same time and had no issues with temperatures. The only thing I would say the place needed was oven gloves and some more oven trays. The hot tub was great and an amazing size. Everyone said they would come back again!

  • "We had a lovely holiday, very well equipped house, particularly the kitchens and lots of room for our family group of 11 adults and 2 dogs."

Lots to do in the surrounding area. The hot tub was well used and enjoyed by all. Unfortunately, both of mattresses of the four poster beds were really uncomfortable, could do with being replaced. The cooker in the main kitchen was very hard to light and had to be done using a match as the ignition didn't work. Bath towels were quite small and the instructions for the sauna were difficult to understand, would have also been nice to have some plastic glasses for the hot tub and garden. The sky light in the small bedroom needs a blind to stop the light coming in so early in the morning.

One of the ovens is a little difficult to light. Other than that we enjoyed our stay, good amenities, idealy located.

  • "We had an amazing stay at the Powerhouse in Skinningrove despite the uncleanliness of the house."

I will start with the positives: The house was an amazing size for our party of 12 and 3 small dogs. The entrance is stunning with an amazing feature staircase. The 2 kitchens and 2 lounges made it easy for us not to be on top of one another. The hot tub, sauna and snooker table were amazing. Unfortunately as soon as we arrived we noticed that the property was not just unclean but very dirty. We go away every year to a holiday let and this is the first time we have encountered such uncleanliness. We had read this on other feedback but didn't deter us as thought it was maybe just on those occasions. It is clear to see that this property lacks love and attention and all of the party commented on how unclean it was. Unfortunately, we will not return to this house which is a shame as it was perfect in every other way. This really needs a deep clean from top to bottom and maybe a larger team of cleaners between lets.

It’s a beautiful house with enough beds for 15 people, everything was there what we needed in the kitchen. The hot tub and sauna is lovely after a day out walking around Whitby. The only thing I would recommend is hairdryers for the bedrooms, but apart from that we all had a fantastic weekend. There is a pub literally 2 minutes away and the food is great and huge portions. Great communication with the owner of the house, and I would 100% recommend this house for family/friends/ Christmas etc gatherings.

  • "Had a wonderful stay here at The Power House for my 60th birthday celebrations."

........6 adults, 3 grandchildren and 3 dog's. Absolutely fantastic stay, plenty room with us all to spread around. I'll start with the positive stuff........lovely and warm (once we got the heating on). Beds comfortable, lovely powerful showers. Spacious bedrooms. Two very spacious kitchens with all the amenities you need. Absolutely fantastic, huge hot tub (or as my grandson called it "the pool") spent endless hours in there, absolutely loved it, and there's a nice sauna, all in a separate huge summer house kind of building. Two huge lounges (just incase you want to get away from any of your noisy family). Pool table came in handy to give each other a thrashing at pool, and there's also a game of air hockey too. We took our own board games, but from what I could see, there where games in the cupboards, can't comment further as I didn't get them out to look at. Lovely front, secure, spacious garden for the dogoes to run round in, can imagine it would be absolutely gorgeous in warmer weather. Gorgeous beach about 10 minutes drive away, flipping cold though (but it was 15th and 16th January). Couple of negative things to point out........ One of the radiator's in the lounge where black sofa's are didn't work, and with it being middle of January it made a big difference to the heating in that lounge, was quite cool, but after a few board games and a few drinks, we soon warmed up. The bath panel in the far bedroom down corridor had pieces missing from it at the top , some of the blinds looked a bit tired, like the en-suite one in the above bedroom mentioned. Some of the bed pillows could do with changing, they where rather flat. The air hockey table could do with a screen in one side of the legs. And I also noticed in the lounge where the grey sofas are, the left window as you walk in, some of the plaster on the right side of frame is all flaking off. Child gates could also do with updating, they where a bit naff, and not so child safe. It was just the smaller things like this that I marked the property down on with star rating. But can I just add, none of this had an impact on the wonderful time we all had, we truly did have a lovely time. And considering how big the house is, we did have it lovely and warm and cosy. So Mike (owner)..........sort these minor things out and the star ratings I'm sure will increase. Thank you for a wonderful stay x

  • "All 16 of us had a fantastic time at The Powerhouse."

It was everything it was advertised to be. We had so much space and the children enjoyed the use of their own sitting room. The house was lovely and warm with such a cosy atmosphere. The large dining table was excellent to use for the adults murder mystery game. One large table could also be used as a snooker table which was enjoyed by some family members. Two fridges meant we could use one for food and the other for alcohol which was ideal. There were plenty of dishes, plates, glasses etc so we could be economical with both dishwashers. We found the beds comfortable and cosy. Most of the furnishings around the house are quite dated but we felt that added to the charm of this old building. The sofas in both living rooms were cosy although we did have a problem with one of the recliners jamming. We loved the Christmas decorations, especially the tree, which was an unexpected treat for everyone. The hot tub and sauna were fantastic. We enjoyed a trip to the beach which is beautifully unspoilt. The kiddies went splashing in the sea. The air temp was a healthy 11 degrees! Our celebration meal in the Kascade restaurant was brilliant with such friendly staff. We took a trip to Staithes and the children enjoyed a pony trek expedition at a nearby stables. The house itself can be a little noisy with squeaky floorboards upstairs and voices echoing from room to room too but none of that bothered us at all. We loved our stay and would happily repeat it.

  • "This property is amazing!"

It has a fabulous staircase which opens out onto two parts of the house. It may have been two separate holiday lets in the past as there are two of almost everything. Two kitchens, two lounges, two entrances (only one in use during our stay as one of the keys was absent for the first door.) 6 bedrooms plus a mezzanine room. Bed linen was clean and fresh. There is everything you need pots and pans wise to cook for a large gathering- there were 15 of us with 3 babies and 2 dogs. We cooked every night and with two ovens managed to cater well enough, my only big bug bearer was trying to find different utensils and having to go between two kitchens all the time! The main kitchen dining table converts to a pool table so the boys loved that. The hot tub house is a great addition to this property with its own shower room too. We couldn’t quite get the program right for the bubbles to stay on for more than 30 seconds at a time though, but it was clean and checked daily for the right chemical mix by the owners. We couldn’t get the sauna to work, but it wasn’t a big issue. Recycling of rubbish was not clear, and I think the owners need to specify somewhere in their literature about which bins are used for what purpose?! We certainly couldn’t work it out so did our best! The garden is smaller than expected, but there is space for at least 5-6 big cars on the driveway. It is about a 10 minutes walk to the most local beach at Skinningrove and 15 to the better bigger one with fine golden sands, and very clean. We loved the beaches in the area and Saltburn is only a few minutes drive too. There is also a shopping area with a big Asda, Aldi and Food outlets, B&M etc within a few minutes drive. I did a huge online shop beforehand from Sainsburies that was delivered on the day of our arrival and there was plenty of fridge and freezer space to stock everything. Whitby is a bit further along the coast, about a 1/2 hr drive so well worth a visit, and there are also some beautiful bays such as Staithes and Runswick bay that also have nice beaches along that journey. Long coastal walks are great along the beaches of Marske and Redcar - (about 15 mins) you can time it so tide is out!

It has to be experienced in order to believe! Surprise for wife's 70th. She had no idea what or where, On arrival met by birthday balloons and streamers all over hallway and stairs! 3 minutes later 5 faces appeared on balcony and she almost had a heart attack as it was our daughter's family! Choice of at least 6 bedrooms and assisted by grand daughter, she chose the "olde worlde" 4 poster with en- suite. Family unloaded our car and took cases up while she recovered with a glass or three. Meal time arrived and our daughter took her to local fish & chip shop (recommended). She returned to be met by "apparently stray" black dog who she did not recognise, still being in shock, This dog was soon followed by our son's family! It then dawned that she had all of our family together.(Just within lockdown rules, although she had thought that they were all otherwise engaged) After the meal we explored this fantastic place. 2 kitchens, 2 lounges with tv and entertainment system. Snooker/pool table and the icing on the cake - a separate building housing an 8 person hot tub and sauna, complete with mood lights and i pod compatible music system. At least 6 bedrooms (I lost count) 3 with en-suite bath/shower. 2 additional showers and a family bathroom with shower. This converted and modernised coal mine building provided absolutely everything. Our group was 11 humans aged from 10 to 71 years together with 1 well behaved dog, although can accommodate more comfortably. Local facilities include general store, pub, beach and disused harbour, hill walks, takeaways and much more. I cannot thank Mike and Lorraine enough for providing this fabulous experience (even essential supplies were available on arrival) and hope that their business prospers. I spent my first morning in the house going around every room sweeping cobwebs, dead spiders and dirty skirting boards clean. I was actually embarrassed to show family that were joining us the following morning around the house so I cleaned and swept dirty floors until I couldn’t see any visible dirt or cobwebs. Our guests commented that the house looks lovely until your inside! It’s very run down ! 2 Toilet seats were hanging off, the toilet in our en suite has a dodgy flush button and this would make the toilet cistern trickle all night loud enough to keep me awake. The main bathroom bath has a very bad leak, my daughter had to use over 20 towels to dry the floor, this is very noticeable from the main kitchen as the ceiling at the back of the kitchen has very bad water damage, I read a review on the house early this year complaining about the same thing so obviously nothing has been done all year to repair the bath!!! Overall I was very very disappointed in the cleanliness of the house, I didn’t book a holiday to come away to clean but I had too because I was embarrassed to show our guests around. The hot tub was checked every day not always filled up and after a few days I could see grime building up around the sides of the hot tub, whoever was checking it certainly did nothing to clean this either ! I think you need to advise the owners to carry out a deep clean on the house as it has put us off ever booking again. I’m very disappointed in total we spent over £2000 for 6 days including travel and shopping and I feel ripped off. I would not recommend that grimy dirty house to any of my friends or family! It was airless and claustrophobic. The bathroom in the double with en-suite was in need of a deep clean. The lip between the tiles & upper wall was coated in thick dust as was the bath edge beneath the shower screen. The toilet pedestal was dirty. Two brackets on the wall by the sink indicated a missing shelf. The two rear gas rings in both kitchens did not light with the ignition and required matches One would not light at all. The bottom oven in the far kitchen was extremely difficult to light. The round slow cooker could not be used as the control knob was missing. The lid had been missing but was found in the main kitchen. Obviously kitchen equipment is not checked very carefully. According to the property description there should have been two bathrooms (plus the downstairs shower & toilet) There appeared to be only one which had to be used by eight people. • "Well what a house."

......we had an amazing time at The Powerhouse. Mike was very welcoming and gave us a tour of the house and showed us the basics. This house was perfect for our group where we celebrated New Year 2018, lots of space for everyone. The only point that I would raise is not a fault of the owner and more of a note for guest attending, noise travels and you can hear every little noise/ conversation throughout the house. The pool table is not in the best condition but this didn't stop our group playing many many many hours of play pool, brilliant fun and a great feature. The highlight was the hot-tub and the Smart TV (lots of dancing from you-tube connections), all the facilities were good and the bedding was fresh and smelt beautiful. We have made some great memories at this property and would certainly return. Prefect for friends and family groups and very dog friendly.

A few issues with showers leaking and could do with an overhaul clean to get back to standard. Small rips in snooker table and couldn’t find a triangle. Good base for exploring surrounding area. Hot tub and sauna was great, lovely and clean, well maintained.

  • "Having booked accommodation through Sykes Cottages previously we had high expectations for this trip as it had been given a 4 tick rating (the same rating as a previous booking elsewhere in the UK)."

Unfortunately, we were very disappointed upon arrival by the cleanliness of the property. Whilst it was clear that some basic cleaning had taken place as part of the changeover, we all felt there was a need for a deep-clean throughout the property: skirting boards and surfaces throughout were incredibly dusty, the kitchen units has a thick layer of sticky grime on them and an unacceptable amount of dust, cobwebs and debris lay under the furniture in the 2 reception rooms (including pistachio shells under one sofa). The floors throughout the ground floor were very dirty and the toddler and small children who were playing on the floors had black feet within a few hours of being in the house. The kitchen facilities were ok, but not what we would expect from a 4 tick rating - the only coffee pot was broken, the two ovens were filthy, the dishwashers and washing machines hadn't been wiped down in a long while and the door to the grill in one kitchen was broken. One set of crockery is also terribly chipped and most of the mattresses are in need of being replaced. The snooker table is poorly maintained as it has a large rip in the cloth. The house itself provides a great space for a big group but it was severely let down by the standard of cleanliness and general upkeep. Previous reviews had commented on its immaculate condition; sadly that was not the state we found the house in. We strongly disagree with the rating of the property and feel rather disgruntled that we paid for a standard of accommodation that was a long way off what we received.

Would highly recommend the Cod and Lobster pub in Staithes for food ....scrummy! Great fish and chips from the Skiningrove chip shop and they do gluten free that made my Mums day! We had a great time in the hot tub the children loved the snooker/pool table. The teenager loved the fact that he could have one of the living rooms and TV set up for his PS4 whilst the adults had the other living room. The adults loved that we had Netflix for once the children were in bed to relax on a night. The bedrooms were clean and lots of space and very comfy beds, well mine was. I had the family room with the upstairs area which our 8 year snd 5 year old children loved. The village you walked through to get to the beach is a little run down but it didn't impact on our holiday and the beach had lots of dogs walking and was clean.
