Weardale Cottage, 2 West Terrace, Westgate-in-Weardale, Bishop Auckland, Durham, DL13 1JJ

Description of the cottage holiday

A charming stone-built terraced cottage situated in an ideal location right in the village of Westgate. The cottage dates back to the 1850s and retains much of its original character. There is a lovely secluded garden and off-road parking is available. There are two bedrooms, one twin and one double with ensuite toilet and handbasin, a lounge, separate dining room, small kitchen, bathroom with shower and a utility room.

Best Features

The cottage has been updated with various renewable energy features, including solar water heating, air source heat pump and wood-burning stove. We provide fuel for the stove within the cottage rental price, as well as bed linen and towels.

There are original stone flagged floors, a solid fuel Rayburn, and a south facing garden (a real sun trap)

The cottage is handy for the local shop, pub and many lovely walks by the river, in the woods and up on the moors.

Sleeps: from 0 to 4

We liked Weardale Cottage because it is cosy, 'green', well situated, bookable on a flexible basis, well appointed. it is cosy - e.g. the woodburning stove is lovely and the electric blankets toast you nicely! it is 'green' - with solar water heating and an air sourced heat pump. THe situation is good - one can walk the Weardale Way from the house, the burn behind the house makes an interesting and varied short walk, teh co-op could not be nearer, yet being set back from the road it is quiet. We also like being able to book for part of a week, if one wishes. And it has lots of the stuff one might want.

Cottage Review:

Rustic stone floored converted miners' cottages making a very quirky single cottage with two flights of stairs, one leading to each bedroom. Our children thought this was bizarre and are still talking about how the house was originally two seperate dwellings. Rural chic with all the mod cons. The kitchen has been refurbished since we were last there and is very clean and has everything required for quick snacks or a three course meal! All the beds, including a third single'put me up' for our youngest(complete with age appropriate bedding) were all made up and there was a plentiful supply of towels, if required. We never touched the heating system and were so very warm and cosy throughout our stay, which saw some fairly low temperatures. All in all a very nice eco friendly cottage, which represented great value for money. Lots to do in area. NT Washington hall and gardens and Gibside, washington WWT, Killhope mine, Nenthead mine, Stanhope open air pool, St John's pool at Garrigill near Alston, Stanhope, Slit wood walk, Stepping stones at Stanhope for kids, Barnard Castle (lovely town), Durham, Hamsterley Forest, Hexham are all places we have visited either this time or in past visits to the Dale
