Stag Cottage, Kinlochan, Glen Hurich, Glenfinnan, Fort William, Highlands, PH37 4LX

Description of the holiday cottage

Stag Cottage is situated at the end of Loch Doilet, nestled beneath the pine trees to the centre right of the picture. It was built in the late 19th century for the gamekeeper of the Glenhurich estate and is an unspoilt and beautiful part of the Ardnamurchan peninsular.

Best Features

One of the best places in Scotland to photograph Pine Martens who visit the cottage most nights and eat peanuts from the windowsill. Local Badgers and Fox also visit during the night. The cottage is an ideal location for walking, cycling or fishing holidays as well as the opportunity to see the wonderful wildlife and birds in the area. Perfect as a base for touring the Ardamurchan peninsular and enjoying the special beauty that the area has to offer.

Cottage Review:

Stag cottage is a remote, peaceful and special place. A ferry crossing of Loch Linnie sets the tone, once across to the far side of the Loch you begin to feel outside the modern world and the closer you get to Glen Hurich the further away you are from the 21st Century and its manic lifestyle. The journey out is one of pretty views and breathtaking (and sometimes scary) scenery.

Stag Cottage is a lovely, quaint, old-fashioned place, comfortable and welcoming. You don’t get WiFi or a mobile phone signal – that’s part of the appeal. Take a break from technology, relax and learn to appreciate nature. Listen to the babbling of the nearby brook, walk in the forest, and hear the breeze carrying the call of a buzzard or the croak of a heron. Enjoy the whoosh of the breezes in the trees. Watch the beautiful small birds flitting around the garden; enjoy the woodpeckers stealing peanuts. In the evening and early morning you may be graced by Pine Martens, one of the most amazing creatures I have ever seen. You may see a badger or a fox wandering about.

Great beauty and a special feeling that is both relaxing and invigorating surround stag Cottage. I guess that so many folks return speaks volumes.

Cottage Review:

Stag Cottage is tucked away beneath pine trees, at the tip of Loch Doilet. Reached by a steep & winding road, the cottage is 6 miles from the nearest village. Be sure to take a plentiful supply of food provisions as it's a long haul back to Strontian, if you've forgotten the milk for your tea!

There is just one neighbouring house a few hundred yards away. During our stay we encountered our neighbour once or twice, walking her dog. Other than that & one or two passing hikers, we felt pretty much cut off from the hurly burly of the outside world, which is exactly what we wanted. There is no phone signal, no wifi, and no TV signal. Perfect!

The cottage is in its own private garden, with a glimpse of the loch from the living room window. The furnishings are cosy and every amenity seems to have been thought of. The log burning stove was lovely to relax in front of in the evening, after a long day walking.

Apart from the stunning scenery, which surrounds the cottage the jewel in its crown is the abundance of wildlife literally on the doorstep. Pine Martens, Fox, Badger, Owls, countless garden birds. Oh, not forgetting the bats which roost within the cottage walls; it was amazing.

I would revisit Stag Cottage in a heartbeat; I didn't want to leave.

A very attractive and comfortable base for exploring the beautiful peninsular. All conveniences and very useful drying room. No housekeeping service due to location but no problem. Woodburner for extra warmth on chilly nights. Pine martens, badgers, deer, foxes visitors!
