Wow! Everything about our stay was just excellent; from the simply stunning countryside views to the cottage itself. Despite some small items being removed due to covid, my family and I had everything we needed during our week’s stay and we found the accommodation to be fully equipped. It was very clean and tidy upon arrival and Len Cottage certainly exceeded our expectations. Both the manager, Harriet and also the farm owner were very kind and helpful throughout our stay; being particularly thoughtful with activity ideas for our toddler. We found several places to visit within a half an hour’s drive including: biking at Grafham Water and Hamerton zoo, both of which were great fun. Not to mention the glorious walks available surrounding the cottages, and also in the most beautiful neighbouring villages. We had a wonderful meal at The Black Horse in Elton, which is another nearby picturesque settlement. We can’t praise Len Cottage enough! The house itself was just stunning, good value for money and there is lots to do nearby. We shall be returning at the earliest opportunity!

We chose Nene Valley Cottages as we have relatives in the area. It was really useful when Manager Harriet emailed directions to us a few days before our arrival. Harriet met us at the cottages to socially distant welcome us, and was friendly and helpful. We stayed in the one bedroom Alice Cottage, and would highly recommend this beautiful development of converted barns. Absolutely ideal if a family group were staying, as there are two, two bedroom cottages and the one bedroom cottage, plenty of parking and a huge grassy area at the back for children to play safely. The location was perfectly for a quiet relaxing holiday, being along a private farm track, well away from the road. The individual gardens were pristine with garden furniture to enjoy the surrounding countryside. We had several evening walks round the surrounding fields, and enjoyed the most amazing sunsets to the sound of birds singing, altogether making a fabulous relaxing atmosphere. The cottage was immaculately clean with bathroom and kitchen well equipped with everything anyone would need. The quality furnishings and lovely comfy bed and sofa were a real treat. The home produced sausages and bacon in the freezer were delicious, as was the wine, (Thank you Harriet:-) We found many beautiful little villages with picture postcard lime stone cottages and quaint country pubs within easy travelling distance. We had a lovely lunch at The Black Horse at Elton, and visited the nearby Bosworth Garden Centre. There is a big Waitrose Supermarket at nearby village of Oundle. The renowned Rushden Lakes shopping complex is about 12 miles distant, which has a wildlife area with fantastic lake side walks, (which my Husband enjoyed wandering round while I was enjoying the fantastic shops!) We were delighted to see a swans nest, with eggs on the ornamental pond within the shopping development!

As Holiday Cottage Owners ourselves we love "to be on the other side of the fence" and stay in self catering holiday cottages. My Husband and I both agreed Nene Valley Cottages would rate as the best we have ever visited and would certainly recommend them. We would definitely love to return again in the future.

Nene Valley Cottages and "Alice" was a fabulous cottage, half a mile down a track in the middle of a working farm. Surrounded by fields with far reaching views and loads of wildlife, its a fantastic base for some glorious villages to visit with lovely pubs/restaurants. We had the added bonus of wonderful weather, which has left us with fond memories of a holiday we wont forget. Everything in the area is based around the Nene River, which is the 10th longest in the UK!

Harriot, the property manager, looks after everything with superb communication and everything well organized including the a local pub list which is priceless! We will be back!!

Back again for another visit to Nene Valley Cottages. This time stayed in the smallest cottage (Alice) which was very comfortable and had a very well equipped kitchen. The cottages are in a secluded location with wonderful unobstructed views and yet only a short drive from Oundle. They also have walking from the doorstep if you need it. This is the second year we've visited and there's still lots to explore in the Nene Valley - loads of good walking, quaint towns and historic attractions. Highly recommend these cottages - we intend to return again soon.

Brief summary (more detail below):

~ Great quality in design, decor, furnishings and fittings

~ Aesthetically pleasing

~ Clean, comfortable and practical

~ Beautiful environment and views

~ Great service, everything maintained with consummate care

~ Nene Valley Cottages totally deserve their awards

More details ....

CONCEPT ~

Concept, style and quality are superb ~ whether for three generations of family engaging in outdoor activity and indoor games, or for a couple enjoying quiet comfort. We’ve done all of those.

TECHNOLOGY ~

A good range of technology is provided for communication and entertainment; everything’s obviously well thought through and well maintained; and mobile phone signal is now good.

KITCHEN, DINING, LAUNDRY ~

We’ve experienced two of the cottages and their kitchens: they are beautifully equipped with quality, no-fuss tableware, utensils, storage, and washing facilities. Facilities for a range of cooking methods are provided. You just walk in and feel at home.

UTILITIES ~

Heating options are good and ~ a point on which rental properties sometimes fail because no-one “lives” there to notice ~ plumbing is all in good nick and bathrooms, showers and kitchen are hygienically clean.

LAYOUT ~

Entire site layout well thought through, inside and out. Well-defined outdoor spaces for each cottage, without visually obtrusive boundary markers in the beautifully maintained gardens.

DECOR, FURNISHINGS ~

The decor is beautifully subtle. Comfortable quality furnishings make sitting room and bedrooms feel cosy and all the household linen is high quality and clean. In the bedrooms, the storage units and bedside cupboards have a range of hanging rails, shelves and drawers with impressive capacity and they open and shut quietly and smoothly.

In particular, these generous capacity, light-coloured fittings give the rooms a feeling of light airiness in a way that perfectly complements the variety of superb artwork around the cottages.

LOCAL FACILITIES ~

Among local retailers in the area, we’ve used Co-op/Waitrose in Oundle just 6 miles distant along a main road north. And an impressive village store with local produce and a pharmacy in Alconbury 10 miles to the east.

The historic Montagu Arms in Barnwell is a charming village hostelry with warm atmosphere, good food, wines and beers, and service - plus an attentively maintained log fire in winter. The village of Barnwell is an easy walk, just 2 miles’ stride across the fields.

SERVICING ~

With each of our (three) visits the management of Nene Valley Cottages has been superb - courteous, thoughtful, efficient and responsive. In a friendly welcome, house rules and sources of useful information have been helpfully explained, and any follow-up queries have received prompt, cheerful and constructive response.

CONCLUSION ~

We stay in self-catering accommodation around the British Isles a couple of times a year. Our visits to these particular cottages have been a treat each time.

We don’t set out to stay in award-winning properties per se - but what we’ve experienced in Nene Value Cottages shows that they are unquestionably deserving of the Visit England and Gold Award accolades they’ve been given.

This is our 6th year at the cottages to spend a week with our grandchildren in the school holidays. We have stayed at all 3 over the years and they are all of the same excellent standard. Nothing is forgotten to make your stay super comfortable and Harriet the property manager is always available to help if needed. I would recommend unreservedly.

We were visiting Oundle for a large family gathering and having such a lovely cottage to stay in made the weekend even more special.

The location was quiet and peaceful yet easy to get to from the town. The Welcome Hamper was lovely which made first night catering simpler, especially after a long journey.

The single level layout of the cottage was especially suitable for our senior member, who at 92 is not quite so agile.

We had the most relaxing and enjoyable stay in Graham Cottage.. The cottage was beautifully clean and light and airy. We had fantastic views of the surrounding countryside just by looking out of the windows. Wildlife was also very visible i.e. hares and pheasant plus loads of birds. My husband used the farm walks everyday and thoroughly enjoyed reporting back to me all he had seen. We opted for a quiet relaxing holiday and so the the beautiful surrounding villages and the sight of so many red kites fulfilled that wis, The Barn at Waddenhoe is a lovely tea room with very friendly staff and Waitrose in Oundle provided all our shopping needs plus super coffee!. Thank you to Harriet for all her help. We sincerely hope to return next year.

What a fantastic holiday cottage, we all settled in very quickly. A most wonderful welcome pack and spotless accommodation and thanks Harriet nothing too much trouble when asking questions. Would certainly recommend this tranquil location and only just down the road where we live. Asked if my father would manage as he had a stroke four years ago, he did really well.

Gale force winds all week and do you know what - it didn’t matter one bit. The cottage was very roomy, comfortable and clean - a real home from home. The welcome pack was the best we’ve ever had by a country mile and the host was very welcoming. Despite the aforementioned weather we had a great time exploring the area - even at this time of year there were lots of things to do and we plan coming back to explore even more - you’re spoilt for choice in this woefully underrated area.

The cottages were everything we wanted - beautifully furnished, clean and extremely well equipped. We were lucky to have exceptional February weather and were able to enjoy sitting outside and walking around the farmland surrounding the cottages. It is amazingly quiet and there was so much wildlife, we saw hares and red kites and evidence of badgers. We are thinking of coming again as we enjoyed our stay so much.

We stayed in Alice cottage for a week to explore the area. A superb location, a number of areas are within an hour’s drive including Ely cathedral, NT places like Wicken Fen. We also went to Huntingdon races and Oundle is a beautiful little town with everything you need.

The cottage was beautifully appointed, separate kitchen and sitting room which you don’t always get in smaller properties. Lovely welcome back including milk, wine, bread and all essentials. Don’t forget to look in the freezer for the locally produced sausages and bacon!

Another highlight was the ability to run / walk on the farm tracks. You never need Tovar’s go on the roads if you don’t want to. And what a sunset! South facing vista was incredible. A superb week’s holiday. Getting away from it all but still with a WiFi signal! Perfect

We loved our stay in Alice Cottage. Without wanting to gush, it was probably 'the' nicest self catering accommodation we have ever found ourselves in. Beautifully decorated, having separate kitchen to sitting room, comfortable sofa, bed, everything thought of. Big thumbs up. This was the most beautiful home-from-home for our working week in nearby Fotheringhay.

Excellent cottages near Kettering

A very well thought out Len cottage with everything you could wish for in a holiday let. The cottage was like home from home, very clean and with comfortable beds and sofas. It has beautifull views and countryside from patio doors leading out to the well kept gardens across the farmers fields. This was our second visit and will definitely be returning. Harriet is a lovely host who welcomed us on arrival. The location is great too with Peterborough and Cambridge a short drive away along with many places to explore like Nene Valley Railway.

A hidden gem

I’ve stayed here a few times and each time I’m amazed by the peace and quiet. It’s instant relaxation! The views across the fields are beautiful, you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere! But the best thing is that you’re not. There’s loads to do from quaint village pubs, beautiful market towns like Oundle or cities like Peterborough and Cambridge not too far away! The beautiful river nene is very close for fishing, canoeing or walks in the countryside. The cottage is very tastefully decorated, the kitchen has everything! The patio doors lead to a lovely garden, excellent for an evening glass of wine after a busy day exploring!!

We have holidayed at Nene Valley Cottages (NVC) many times since 2008. Normally we choose cosy 'Graham' but sometimes spacious 'Len'. We enjoy heritage holidays (National Trust, Historic Houses, English Heritage, etc) and for these NVC are exceptionally placed being 10 mins from the A14 (west-east) and 20 mins from the A1 (north-south) so well placed to explore many counties and their many attractions. The region itself is unspoiled England at its absolute best with undulating countryside and charming historic towns such as Oundle, Stamford and Oakham. The cottages are truly a 'home from home', beautifully warm and comfortable and well equipped, and always a delight to return to at the end of the day. A few attractions within 45 mins - 60 mins drive include: Althorp House, Burghley House, Barnsdale Gardens, IWM Duxford, Wimpole Hall, Woburn Abbey (and Safari Park), Wrest Park - there are so many!
