Kittiwake Cottage, 3 Greenfield Terrace, Portreath, Cornwall inc Scilly, TR16

Description of the cottage holiday

Kittiwake is a traditional, stone, terraced Cornish cottage built in about 1870. It has a lovely long garden - a work in progress! - with Dracaena palms, gunnera and other 'Cornish' plants. There are raised vegetable beds and fruit bushes and a greenhouse and - if you come at the right time of year - there are fruit and vegetables for you to enjoy, especially if you do some watering! The cottage has a large, lockable shed for bikes, boards and wetsuits with garden/beach toys and a mini-table football/snooker table. The garden has three seating areas, so you can enjoy the sun at any time of day. Parking is easy, with a dedicated space at the end of the back garden and room on Greenfield Terrace itself. A few minutes' level walk brings you to the beautiful, sandy beach, ideal for surfing, swimming and beach-combing. Rock pools uncovered at low tide present lots of opportunities for children to explore and even to swim. At the end of Greenfield Terrace is a small park and just across the road at the back of the cottage is a children's playground. All your every-day needs can be met in Portreath, with its pubs, cafés. restaurants, mini-supermarket, post office and bakery. Kittiwake has three bedrooms - a double room, a twin-bedded room and a single room - and is equipped for up to five adults and/or children. There is also a standard-sized cot which can be pre-booked. The cottage has oil-fired central heating, with thermostat-controlled radiators in all rooms. The front room has comfortable seating for five, a television and DVD/CD player and a wood burner for cooler evenings and autumn or winter stays. Lots (and lots!) of books and jig-saws, games, DVDs and CDs are provided in case the sun goes in on the odd day. The kitchen-diner has a pine farm-house table and chairs, oven, gas hob, fridge and dishwasher and is equipped with kettle and toaster and the usual pots and pans, crockery, glasses and cutlery. Tea-towels are supplied. Washing machine, freezer and tumble dryer can be found in an outside laundry room and there is a 'garden loo'. All beds have duvets, with bedding and towels supplied - but please bring beach towels witih you. The bathroom has a bath and modern shower. Portreath is situated on Cornwall’s North Coast which is more rugged than the gentler South Coast. In both directions spectacular views can be had from high, rocky cliffs across the Atlantic Ocean. Many seabirds can be seen on ledges in the cliffs and in the air, skimming the surface of the sea in search of their next meal. Seals are resident all along the coast, with visiting dolphins often seen playing in groups of six or eight some way from the shore. The village is situated about half-way between Newquay and St. Ives and is on the South West Coast Path. Cyclists and horse riders can ride from Portreath right across the county to Devoran almost all off-road on the 11 mile Coast to Coast Mineral Tramway Trail, which passes directly behind Kittiwake Cottage. The trail is based on the route taken by the horse-drawn carts taking coal imported from Wales to the tin and copper mining areas inland and bringing the ore to be transported back to South Wales for smelting.

Best Features

For us, Kittiwake is an escape from life's hassle - a fantastic place to stay in winter or in summer. Luckily all our visitors agree with us! It's near the beach, the woods, paths and cycle trails, local shops, pubs and restaurants and a short drive from Cornwall's brilliant gardens and attractions. We just love it there.

Cottage Review:

We had a fantastic fortnight in Kittiwake. The house is very cosy and clean. Everything you need is there including Pint glasses!!! The scones and cream left by the owners were delicious! The children loved the games room down the garden and the house had loads of games and books for when the weather wasn't quite right for the beach! The garden was lovely with plenty chairs for relaxing out there. Being able to pick fresh veg from the garden was a real bonus! We were a little concerned about the size of the single room as my 80yr old Father was going to be sleeping in there, but it was a lot larger than the photos implied and plenty of space for him to get around. We have stayed in and around Portreath many times and the location of this cottage was just perfect. Easy to walk down to the beach with all the gear and within easy distance of the Portreath Arms pub in an evening!!! Having access to the back of the house was a bonus when returning from the beach covered in sand, with a short hosepipe available for rinsing everything down. We will definitely consider staying in this cottage again and would recommend to friends and relatives.

Cottage Review:

Kittiwake Cottage was a complete home away from home. The location close to Portreath was perfect for us as the children aged 11, 9 and 7 had a lifeguarding competition there. We loved the well stocked kitchen with its dishwasher and found we had everything we needed to prepare meals. The kids adored the games room and watering the beautiful vegetable plot. Portreath and the cottage are a great combination for a lovely family holiday. The owners couldn't have made us feel more welcome.
