Cottage Review:  

My wife and I have stayed in and around Chagford to walk and wild camp on the moor for over 20 years. We’re very well acquainted with narrow Dartmoor lanes!!!

Granary Cottage is a beautiful converted Dartmoor barn. Terrific and enjoyable open plan kitchen and living area ……. BUT ….. IT IS UTTERLY UNCONSCIONABLE THAT THOSE INTERESTED IN THIS LET ARE NOT GIVEN A TRULY ACCURATE DESCRIPTION OF THE LANE GOING FROM CHAGFORD TO THE COTTAGE. I’ve never been on a narrower lane down there!! Ever.

Just an inch or three between your outboard mirrors and the vegetation covered granite walls for about 95% of the lane. Doable? Yes. (If you don’t mind a few scratches on your car.) THE PROBLEM - If you meet any oncoming driver, or a tractor or a herded flock of sheep you could find yourself having to back up 50+ yards ……. going backwards around the curving lane!!! With the granite walls. Hideous. Certainly don’t take a nice car here. If you think I’m exaggerating, fine. If you think you’re such a great driver; go for it.

Also I’m afraid that for £1,200 a week I expect a little more attention to “detail.” There was one TV in the living area with two sets of controls. No instructions provided. The TV didn’t work properly. We spent a significant part of our first two evenings trying to figure it out. (Ultimately my wife fixed the problem.)

Have seen/looked at other sites and “reviews” “Great walks” from the cottage? We never found them. Dog walks? You’re lucky to find the very small grass area. for your dog’s last wee at night.

Ultimately it was that hideous 1 mile drive into and out of Chagford every day that did us in. You just dreaded it. Because of it we couldn’t do what we’ve always done …… spend our day out on the moor, go back to our let to freshen up and go back into Chagford for dinner and a couple of glasses of wine. There was no way we’d risk having to back up 50+ yards (in the dark!) around a curve on that extremely (!!!!) narrow lane.

1,200 pounds a week ……… and we left early.

I think that the non-mention of what the lane is really like on all the sites is very highly suspicious.
