Eller Haw Cottage, Cotterdale, Hawes, Hawes, North Yorkshire, DL8 3LT

Description of the self catering property

Nestling in the beautiful hamlet of Cotterdale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Eller Haw Cottage is a delightful two bedroom cottage oozing charm and character. With an attractive stone fireplace in the lounge, some beautiful beamed ceilings exposed stone work, and a window seat deep set in two-foot thick walls. The Cotter Beck runs alongside the stone walls of its garden, attracting many species of birds and animals including red squirrels. From the cottage, there are spectacular views across the green meadows and uplands pastures, a maze of stonewalls between which sheep, and cattle peacefully graze. What more could a person ask for in a truly restful escape to the country? Yet, the bustling market town of Hawes is located just 4 miles away. Car parking for two cars directly by the cottage. 2 pets welcome. WiFi broadband internet

Best Features

Cotterdale is the “secret” of the Yorkshire Dales, yet it lies only four miles from the market town of Hawes.

Cotterdale is a very small hamlet, consisting of only 12 cottages. To find this haven of peace and quiet follow the narrow Dale road for a mile and a half as it runs alongside the twisting, bubbling Cotter Beck a fast flowing mountain steam after which the Dale is named. As you drive along this road a true perspective of the picture postcard location of the hamlet is obtained. Cotterdale is nestles under the protection of high fells, parts which are covered with thick pine forest. Surrounding Cotterdale are green meadows and upland pastures divided by a maze of stone walls between which sheep and cattle peacefully graze.

Here you will find the perfect place for a relaxing country holiday, away from shops, telephones or even street lights; here your companions will be red squirrels, sheep, cows, pheasants as well as the ten permanent residents.

Sleeps: from 1 to 4

Cottage Review:

The chilly weather did not spoil our enjoyment of this beautiful, tranquil Dale.

Red squirrels and woodpeckers were frequent visitors though our German Shepherd preferred the many rabbits.

Hope to be back next year.

Peaceful cottage in rural Yorkshire Dales, with red squirrels as frequent visitors. Well equipped and comfortable. Great garden for sitting out, and pleasant stream. Lots to do in the area. Particularly suitable for dog owners.

Just THE most fabulous cottage and location for peace, quiet and beautiful scenery. The cottage is traditional and pretty and the views from the back garden are breathtakingly beautiful. Facilities are excellent and the cottage is nicely furnished throughout. Spotlessly clean and obviously very well cared for - perfect. We will be booking again!

A beautiful retreat after a hard few months. Just right for walking, relaxing and enjoying the tranquility of this stunning place. The cottage was well equiped and very cosy with the log burner. So peaceful, the only thing you can hear is the flow of the water in the beck. Just heaven and highly recommended, we will be back....

We have just arrived home from a restful week in Ella Haw cottage,it is in the most wonderful location, with lots of wildlife including red squirrels. The cottage is very well equipted whic includes a log burning stove which was wonderful and warm.It had Wifi for the Internet and Freeview TV. The cottage is full of character with crooked walls and lovely beams. It is very tastefully decorated and the bed linen and towels were provided. Hot water on tap and lovely views out of all windows. We couldn't have wanted for more with our stay and if you like peace and tranquility and walking this is the holiday for you and I would highly recommend it. We all thought the cottage was clean, warm, comfortable and well equipped. The location could not have been better for those who enjoy peaceful countryside, dark skies, walking and wildlife. The red squirrells were a delight to see. Anyone with dogs though should be aware of the 'sink holes' on the nearby moor. We had a worrying moment when ours disappeared and was eventually found stuck down one. [Added at Editor's discretion since it appears to be a helpful review and the reviewer has been authenticated]

Eller Haw Cottage is the most beautiful house I have ever had the pleasure of staying in! It has absolutely everything to offer...there's not a thing that Gaynor and Nick haven't thought of and provided!

The cottage is in the most stunning location of Cotterdale with the beck gracefully passing by the back garden!

As we stayed there near Christmas it was extremely kind and thoughtful of Gaynor and Nick to provide a Christmas Tree and decorations!

We had the most wonderful stay and I certainly recommend it to anyone wishing to step into a fairytale and experience the most tranquil and picturesque adventure that Eller Haw and Cotterdale have to offer. We will most certainly be returning, as soon as possible..I hope!

Thank You Gaynor, Nick and the Cleaner for such a fabulous time in your amazing cottage! Looking forward to meeting you again :)

Eller Haw was a delight to visit. The cleanest cottage we have ever visited in 30 years of cottage holidays. Beautiful linen and every little thing you might need is in the cottage. Extremely comfortable and the positioning beside the Beck is wonderful. Our dog loved her daily plays in it, and we loved the peaceful sound. The views are phenomenal. We booked for next year before we even left the cottage. The cottage owners are attentive but unobtrusive and extremely pleasant. There are walks from the door for all abilities.

We stayed in Eller Haw cottage in Cotterdale with our dog for four nights.

The cottage and its setting were so comfortable and beautiful we were reluctant to have 'days out'. The cottage has everything you could possible need and more. The setting is so pretty and private with stunning views from the garden.

The red squirrels visited every day there was no need to sit for hours waiting to see one. Many times a squirrel would be only 4/5 foot away from you sitting on the garden wall.

The beds were comfortable, the water hot, kitchen well equipped and we loved the 'little extras!'

Our only complaint was, it was so nice we didnt want to leave!!

Hi Gaynor,

Arrived back in Plymouth last Night having spent the 2nd week of our holiday at a cottage in the Lake District. The concensus of opinion between the 4 of us was that we wished we had reversed the fortnight and spent the 2nd week at Eller Haw cottage beacuse, having spent the 1st week at your truly beautiful and enchanting cottage (which surpassed our expectations in every way), we just knew that the cottage in the Lake District would be a "come down", and it was. Having said that, the cottage in the Lake District was very nice in its own way but, if we were to do a comparison "tick list" with Eller Haw then all the ticks would be on the Eller Haw side of the chart.

A truly wonderful experience at your cottage and we will certainly be recommending it to all our friends and relatives as well as making sure that we, ourselves, make a return visit.

With grateful thanks

A delightful cottage in very scenic surroundings - much better equiped than other properties we have stayed in.

We were walking the Dales Way so were not in the property during the day. We will almost certainly return to enjoy the beck/garden and local walks.

Just one proviso - you need to love the country side and peaceful surrondings to enjoy this to the full.

Owners also very helpful and obliging

The cottage was absolutely perfect and in a fantastic location. The cottage was very very clean and everything you could need and more. We took our 14 month year old boy and they provided stair gates, baby bath, high chair, baby carrier whcih meant we didnlt have to pack any bulky things which we have had to do before. The location has excellent views and the garden with the beck runnign by is a haven for wildife including Red Squirrels which I have never seen before. The cottage was very well priced for the quality and views from this cottage. The commonuication from the owners was excellent and very informative and friendly. Would definately go again and would recommend to anybody withotu a doubt. A great holiday was had by all.

Dear Gaynor Thank for such a wonderful break we had a excellent time in your cottage. We had everythning we needed and was very clean when we arrived. We saw red squirrels and rabbits on the hillside as we was sitting by the river and was so quiet lovely views and nice walks and the location. we did put nuts out for the squirrels but as we sat there it was the cheeky birds that pinched them everytime. we had beautiful days outs at local places but was so nice driving down the lane to the cottage where is so cosy and warm would sure tell my famiy and friends to vist for a break away from hectic lives and just chill out there. We will be back to vist again in the futre and know it will be nice to just be able to relax and chill out. many thanks for everything Gaynor from Mark and Linda wood

This cottage was perfect for us. We needed to have a complete break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The cottage is near enough to provisions etc but isolated enough to be away from everything. We took lots of walks from the cottage with our dogs and the weather was nice enough to spend time sat outside reading and listening to the peace and quite that prevailed. Really nice place to re-charge the batteries.

If you enjoy high moorland walks, fell running, mountain biking and/or cycling up BIG hills, Eller Haw Cottage in Cotterdale (at the foot of the Pennine Way) near Hawes makes a great base. Don't bother bringing your mobile 'phone... there's no reception (thank goodness). But that's not to say that the cottage is without its creature comforts: as well as central heating, the cottage has WiFi and Sky tv... so after cycling up Tan Hill (ouf!) and walking some of the Pennine Way we were even able to get a few beers in to watch the cycling world championships of tv. Cotterdale wont suit you though if you are spooked by COMPLETE silence and pitch black darkness at night. This is a great place for stargazing when the skies are clear and I can see why it is a haven for dog walkers; pets are welcome at the cottage and in the village, which is also home to a colony of red squirrels (who seem to enjoy running along the stone walls on the other side of the field across the brook at the bottom of the garden). It's a good area for bird watching too: I saw a few harriers whilst we were out on our bikes.
